Abstract

The purpose of this study was to observe the histopathologic tissue reaction and the absorption of several absorbable suture materials following implantation in the femoral and brachii muscle of rabbits. The 14 rabbits, weighing an average of 1.5kg, were employed in this experiment. At the time of implantation, the rabbits were anesthetized with Ketamine HCl intravenous injection and all surgical procedures were performed under aseptic conodition. Two rabbits were sacrificed on the 3rd day and 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks respectively- after implantation and specimens were resected. All the specimens were fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution and embedded in paraffin in the usual
manner. The 4 to 6u sectioned specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin stain and Van Gieson stain. Then the following results were obtained:
1. Histologically, the tissue reactions to all the sutures 3days after implantation were eery similar.
2. Although the absorption process was initiated first of the three materials, the chromic catgut was elicited with severe and prolonged tissue response.
3. The polyglactin 910 and polyglycolic acid sutures were elicited with low tissue response.
4. Histologically, the absorption of polyglactin 910 filaments was begun at approximately 4th weeks and was completed within 12 weeks.
5. Based upon histologic examinatiop., actually all remnants of the chromic catgut and polyglycolic acid were not absorbed completely at 12 weeks.
